A few years ago I had the pleasure of designing the world of Abyssal Arts's game, City of the Shroud (http://www.abyssalarts.com/shroud). It was a small-scale, but ambitious, indie title.
The story portion of the game was essentially a visual novel, which means many dialogue portraits! I designed and illustrated the various NPCs that appear in-game. There were a few major NPCs that headed up their own factions, and of course the main villain.
The main portion of the gameplay was a real-time tactics style game, with a few different character classes and abilities.
The visual direction was 1910-30s mid-east with some post-apocalyptic elements--we called it Moorish Punk--and the character classes had to tap into that look. The gunner class was already largely designed before I got involved, but the original weapon was too futuristic, and had to be entirely redesigned, in addition to new classes like the duelist and machinist shown here.
